A social issue is a problem in society. A social issue you’re going read today is about endangered elephants. I’m going to tell you a few facts about elephants!

I know some things about African elephants. If want to know about them read this. Elephants spray water on themselves to keep cool. Elephants swat bugs with their tails. Elephants get stolen for jobs at the circus. Elephants are herbivores. Elephants use their tusks to dig up dirt and rocks at salt licks. Elephants do everything together. Elephants are mammals, so they get pregnant and get babies.

Some solutions are telling people stop killing elephants. Start giving elephants food before the performance. Also, try writing a letter to people who are killing, stealing elephants. Elephants are my favorite animal in the whole entire world. That’s why you should stop killing elephants. I have told you facts, how elephants are endangered, and some solutions.

Jorden - Now i know what tusks are for! I didnt know they helped elephants dig at salt licks. But I guess in modern times they have hurt elephants since people kill them for their ivory tusks. Thanks for telling us about their plight. I will tell everyone I know about this ... people cause problems but people can solve them too!

Mykel;
It is a rare occassion that I get to read such a marvelous understanding on what is happening to our elephants form one so young. I think after reading all of your classmates papers that I agree with Ms. Blumenson that you all should be commended for a job well done! With just a small bit of information comes a wealth of knowledge. Learning is not only a good thing but it can be fun also.
Keep up the good work. Have your classmates write a letter as a group to the President and make him aware of the endangered elephants and why they are endangered and ask him to make this a priority of things to accomplish before he leaves the White house.I wish you all much success in all your endeavors.
Thanks for all the information!

Jordan, thanks for the information about elephants. I had heard that they were endangered but hadn't really thought much about it until now. I have always felt a bit uncomfortable about the conditions of elephants in circusus as they seem to be unhappy away from their natural habitat. Perhaps that's because, as you say, they are social creatures and prefer being with other elephants. After reading your essay I will pay more attention to the subject and tell others about the importance of protecting elephants. Thanks for alerting me about the seriousness of the problem. Eva N.

Jorden,
You seem to know a lot about elephants! I am curious to know where you found out all this interesting information. Did you use the internet or did you learn these facts from books? I am impressed by how many facts you jammed into one paragraph! I bet you could write a whole essay about each one of those amazing facts!

Jorden, great job on this essay! Thank you for bringing my attention to this important issue. I particularly like the idea in the last paragraph about writing letters to help save the elephants. I think if we had excellent writers like you sending letters to politicians, we might be able to do more to save the elephants.

Jorden,

Thank you for sharing your essay. I now have a much clearer understanding of the issue. I was very happy to see you mention some solutions. Too often when people write they only talk about the problem. You have taken a stand and provided some concrete things for us to do. It is always important to look for solutions. I'll spread the word and we'lee see what we can do to help your favorite animals.
