Social issues are issues that affect the society in a big way. Social issues are from no electricity to the President dieing right as he was going to make an important speech. Some were in between there is endangered elephants. That brings me to say this is going to be about African elephants. The things you will read about are facts about elephants, why they’re endangered and some solutions.

Did you know that elephants used to be peaceful animals? Now elephants charge at people because they have loss so many family members, even there calves (babies) are dying.
Here are some facts about elephants. Elephants trunks are prehensile (able to grasp, lift, and throw). They are also the elephants upper lip and nose. Elephants weigh five to seven tons and elephants are called pachyderms meaning thick skinned. Elephants have wrinkles in there skin because they hold water in them to keep cool because they are usually in the desert and I’m sure you know deserts are hot a lot so that helps them keep cool.

Elephants are endangered because of lots of reasons but here are 2 reasons because of habitat loss and ivory poaching which means poachers poach elephants for there ivory on there tusk. And habitat loss means with fires kill plant, habitats and elephants. Also the reason they are dying is they are being starved to do tricks at circuses.

Here are two things you can do that can help elephants. One is to make sure no one you know hunts elephants and maybe make something to help elephants like originations. To give you ideas to how to make an origination I would write a letter to the President to tell him why you would want to start an organization to help elephants or any other animal. Then, if he responds to you, do what he says and then you are done.

I hope these facts about elephants why there are endangered and solutions may inspire you to somehow help elephants. Elephants were peaceful lets make them peaceful again for my sake, your sake and the elephants sake. Please help the elephants.

Mykel - Its hard to think of a 5-7 ton elephant as endangered! Perhaps thats why so few Americans think about this. But it is so important to save the natural world, since people in the last hundred years have been changing nature so much. You say loss of habitat is a big reason elephants are endangered. I think that may be a huge problem not only for elephants, but for many animals, and for our planet. I have read about the destruction of rain forests, which (because plants create oxygen) threatens the atmosphere! You are really on to something here! THanks!

mykel, your descriptions of an elephant are terrific! First I didn't know that the elephant's trunk was so useful. Second I didn't know why their skin is so wrinkled. They truly are an unusual and interesting animal. Lately I've been hearing about elephant attacks, so it's important to learn that they are doing this because they are desperate and not because they are violent animals. I agree with you that it's important for all our sakes to take action now. thanks for the information and the tips. Eva

Mykel;
It is a rare occassion that I get to read such a marvelous understanding on what is happening to our elephants form one so young. I think after reading all of your classmates papers that I agree with Ms. Blumenson that you all should be commended for a job well done! With just a small bit of information comes a wealth of knowledge. Learning is not only a good thing but it can be fun also.
Keep up the good work. Have your classmates write a letter as a group to the President and make him aware of the endangered elephants and why they are endangered and ask him to make this a priority of things to accomplish before he leaves the White house.I wish you all much success in all your endeavors.
Thanks for all the information!

Mykel,
I must say, sir, what a wonderful essay! I am shocked and impressed that your 3rd grade mind could develop such a mature report. It reads like one of my students last year wrote it. That is a huge compliment to you because it seems that you really pushed yourself to not only sound grown up but also to include as many details as you could. One word of advice - look back over this essay for any mistakes you may have made; typing is harder than hand-writing and it is easier to mis up the keys. Incredible job, overall, Mykel.

Mykel, I am so impressed by your description of elephants! I knew that elephants had thick and wrinkled skin, but I never knew why. Also, I did not realize that elephants have been charging at people. It is so sad that these peaceful animals are driven to violence. Thank you for helping me to understand more about these incredible animals.

Mykel,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas in this essay. You have done a masterful job structuring your essay to lay out the issue. I now have a some background knowledge about elephants as well as some practical solutions. I have seen many television documentaries on this subject but have found your writing the most informative. Keep up the good work.
